An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conspired with supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in polling units 009, 010 and 011 at Oniong West Ward 1, Onna local government area of Akwa Ibom state, to falsify the presidential and national assembly election in favour of the party.
The information became accessible by the video recorded for Premium Times.
The incident occurred in the village square – Ikot Eko Ibon village – within the full glare of the locals.
Obong Ufot Ekaette, former secretary to the federal government, and his wife, Eme Ekaette, a former senator, are from this region.
But they did not show up for voting on Saturday, March 28. Some of those who spoke to the journalists in the area said the Ekaettes may have remained away from polling because of their dissatisfaction with the ruling party and Governor Godswill Akpabio’s leadership style.
The commission officials were through with voters’ accreditation as early as 1:30pm in the three centres, but denied to start election until some PDP leaders arrived around 4pm.
The PDP chiefs, who seemingly were working in coordination with the INEC officials in the poling stations, immediately asked all the voters to move away from the polling unit.
In the heart of the confusion that followed, gunshot was fired within the polling station, warning the voters who were mostly old men and women from the village to run away for their safety.
The supporters of the ruling party then had a field day thumb-printing ballot papers, under the management of the electoral commission.
Security officials were not deployed in the three units. It is unclear if it is deliberate to allow the PDP supporters execute their plans without molestation.
One of the electoral officers in the centre told reporters he and his colleagues were under pressure from their ‘chief’ to help the PDP win the polls, but didn’t meanwhile clarify who the chief was.
Udom Emmanuel, the PDP governorship aspirant, is from Onna local government area where the rigging taken on the video took place.
The People’s Democratic Movement’s candidate for the House of Representatives (Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency), Anny Asikpo, has made alike supposition of poll result sheets not being available during the election.
“We have 365 polling units, but as I speak to you I have not seen nor know how the result sheets for yesterday’s election look like because everything was carted away by the PDP to an unknown destination. There was no election in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District,” Dr. Asikpo said.
In other parts of Akwa Ibom state, particularly in areas believed as APC strongholds, there were reported cases of non-availability of poll result sheets at the polling stations.
The Akwa Ibom state chapter of the APC has appealed INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, asking for fresh poll in the state.
Umana said the party would not accept the results of Saturday’s elections held in the state.
